Summary

Many pilots have high cholesterol despite normal total cholesterol levels, indicating a need for dietary and lifestyle interventions. Medical support for pilots should address abnormal lipid profiles and atherogenic indices.

Area of Science:

  • Aviation Medicine
  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Serum lipid and antioxidant levels are crucial for heart disease risk assessment.
  • Limited data exists on these markers in healthy populations like pilots.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess serum lipid profiles, antioxidative enzyme activities, and total antioxidative activity in Polish Air Force fighter pilots.
  • To investigate the relationship between lipid concentrations and antioxidative status in this cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Measured red blood cell antioxidative enzymes (SOD, GPx), serum total antioxidative activity (TAS), and lipid concentrations (T-CH, LDL-CH, HDL-CH) in 229 pilots.
  • Calculated the atherogenicity index (T-CH/HDL-CH).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Most pilots (78.2%) exhibited hyperlipidemia, with a mean atherogenic index > 5.
  • Mean activities of SOD, GPx, and TAS exceeded normal limits.
  • Low antioxidative enzyme activity correlated with high T-CH; normal T-CH did not rule out abnormal atherogenicity.

Conclusions:

  • Normal total cholesterol does not preclude elevated LDL-CH, reduced HDL-CH, or an abnormal atherogenicity index in pilots.
  • Medical support should emphasize diet, exercise, and hypolipemic drugs when necessary.
