Summary

Head-up tilt testing did not predict G-tolerance in pilots. This study found no correlation between tilt test results and +Gz acceleration tolerance, indicating its limited utility for pilot selection.

Background:

  • G-tolerance assessment is crucial for military pilot and candidate evaluation.
  • Understanding individual tolerance to high G-forces is vital for flight safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the predictive value of head-up tilt (HUT) testing for individual relaxed +Gz tolerance.
  • To determine if HUT can forecast a pilot's ability to withstand gravitational loads.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty healthy males underwent a 45-minute HUT test using the Westminster protocol.
  • Participants were subsequently evaluated using centrifuge testing with gradual onset rate profiles.
  • Heart rate and blood pressure were monitored during the HUT test.

Main Results:

  • Vasovagal syncope occurred in 20% of subjects during the HUT test, with comparable G-level tolerance to those without syncope.
  • No statistically significant correlation was found between heart rate or blood pressure during the tilt test and +Gz acceleration tolerance.
  • No participants lost consciousness during centrifuge testing.

Conclusions:

  • Head-up tilt testing, as performed with the Westminster protocol, is not a useful predictor of individual +Gz gravity load tolerance.
  • Current HUT protocols may not accurately assess the physiological capacity required for high-G environments.
