Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Urology

Background:

  • Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic used for various psychiatric conditions.
  • Sexual dysfunction is a potential side effect of psychotropic medications.
  • The alpha(1)-adrenergic system plays a role in ejaculatory function.

Observation:

  • Two male adolescents experienced retrograde ejaculation during risperidone treatment.
  • One patient also reported bladder outflow obstruction.
  • The other patient noted reduced ejaculatory volume and decreased semen viscosity.

Findings:

  • Rechallenge with risperidone confirmed ejaculatory dysfunction in one patient.
  • Risperidone, a potent alpha(1)-receptor antagonist, may disrupt sympathetic nervous system function, leading to retrograde ejaculation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Hyperprolactinemia induced by risperidone could contribute to reduced ejaculatory volume.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians must proactively screen for sexual dysfunction and hyperprolactinemia before and during risperidone therapy in adolescents.
    • Awareness of these potential side effects is crucial for maintaining treatment compliance.
    • Further research into the mechanisms of risperidone-induced sexual dysfunction is warranted.
