Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Colorectal Surgery

Background:

  • Mechanical small bowel obstruction (SBO) is an infrequent complication following colonoscopy.
  • Patients with a history of abdominal surgery, particularly involving the bowel, may be at increased risk.

Observation:

  • A patient developed SBO 24 hours after a surveillance colonoscopy.
  • The patient had a history of augmentation cecocystoplasty with continent ileal conduit and subsequent adhesiolysis for extrinsic ileal compression.

Findings:

  • Colonoscopy-induced SBO is a rare but serious complication.
  • Risk factors include prior abdominal surgeries and potential for adhesions causing bowel compression.

Implications:

  • Awareness of this complication is crucial for clinicians performing colonoscopies, especially in patients with surgical histories.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Prompt diagnosis and management are essential for favorable outcomes in patients presenting with SBO post-colonoscopy.
