Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To audit cryoprecipitate utilization patterns at a tertiary care center.
  • To identify appropriate and inappropriate transfusion indications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective audit of 51 patients receiving 88 pools of cryoprecipitate.
  • Analysis of transfusion records and indications.

Main Results:

  • Appropriate indications (hypofibrinogenemia, tPA reversal, massive transfusion, uremic bleeding, fibrin sealant) accounted for 39 patients.
  • Inappropriate uses (warfarin reversal, non-hypofibrinogenemic bleeding, hepatic coagulopathy) involved 12 patients (24% of orders).

Conclusions:

  • Significant cryoprecipitate misuse was observed.
  • Need for targeted education on cryoprecipitate composition and indications is evident.
