Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) showed moderate effects on central retinal function, as measured by multifocal electroretinography (ERG), with no statistically significant changes observed.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases
  • Photodynamic Therapy

Background:

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment option for specific cases of choroidal neovascular membrane (CNV).
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and pathological myopia can lead to CNV.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of PDT on central retinal function.
  • To assess changes using multifocal electroretinography (ERG).

Main Methods:

  • 24 patients (25 eyes) with CNV (classic, occult, or myopia-related) received PDT with Verteporfin.
  • Multifocal ERG was performed before and approximately 6 weeks after PDT.

Main Results:

  • A non-significant trend towards decreased P1 amplitude and increased implicit time was noted in the treated area.

Related Experiment Videos

  • These trends were more evident in occult CNV and myopia-related CNV cases.
  • Similar, non-significant alterations were observed in untreated retinal areas.
  • Conclusions:

    • PDT appears to have moderate effects on retinal function, based on multifocal ERG findings.
    • Limitations included the lack of a control group.
    • Future research should explore repeated PDT and long-term effects.
