Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Injury Prevention

Context:

  • Systematic data collection on recreational water accidents is lacking globally.
  • Drowning, near-drowning, head trauma, and spinal cord injuries are significant global health concerns.
  • Italian statistical data on drowning in bathing waters are available from 1969-1997.

Purpose:

  • To analyze trends in drowning mortality in Italian recreational waters.
  • To identify factors contributing to the observed changes in drowning rates.
  • To advocate for a national strategy for recreational accident prevention.

Summary:

  • Italian drowning mortality in recreational waters dropped from 21 to 7.5 deaths per million resident/year between 1969 and 1997.
  • Mortality decreased in both males and females across all age groups, with a notable reduction in young people.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Factors contributing to this decline include enhanced education, increased adult supervision, and better-organized summer resorts.
  • Impact:

    • Demonstrates the effectiveness of multifactorial interventions in reducing drowning incidents.
    • Highlights the importance of systematic data collection for public health surveillance.
    • Provides evidence supporting the development and implementation of national accident prevention strategies.
