Summary

A novel graphical analysis method quantifies thyroid function using technetium-99m pertechnetate (99mTc) uptake. This simple, non-invasive technique accurately evaluates thyroid perfusion and uptake in subjects, including hyperthyroid patients.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Radiopharmacology
  • Medical Imaging Analysis

Background:

  • Thyroid function assessment traditionally involves uptake measurements and imaging.
  • Quantitative evaluation of thyroid perfusion non-invasively remains a challenge.
  • Technetium-99m pertechnetate (99mTc) is a commonly used radiotracer for thyroid imaging.

Observation:

  • A new method utilizes graphical analysis of 99mTc transfer from blood to thyroid.
  • Data acquisition involved bolus injection and dynamic imaging over 30 seconds.
  • Region of interests (ROIs) were placed over the aortic arch and thyroid lobes.

Findings:

  • Graphical analysis yielded a straight line, enabling calculation of unidirectional influx rate (k(u)).
  • Thyroid Perfusion Index (TPI) was introduced for standardization.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Both k(u) and TPI correlated well with 99mTc thyroid uptake, with higher values in hyperthyroid patients.
  • Implications:

    • This non-invasive method offers a simple, quantitative approach to thyroid evaluation.
    • It may be particularly useful for assessing thyroid perfusion, especially in the initial pass of the tracer.
    • The findings suggest potential for improved diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid disorders.
