Chemical treatment of verrucae
Abstract:
Viral warts such as verrucae vulgaris, verrucae plana, and cutaneous horns, when located in close proximity to the eye, can be the cause of chronic, mild conjunctivitis. Removal by chemical cautery using bichloroacetic acid, or by simple excision for pedunculated verrucae, can produce a welcome reduction in symptoms. Chemical cautery may also be employed for the cosmetic treatment of xanthelasma. The proper techniques for cautery and for excision, as well as the evaluation of patients for complications, are discussed.
