  • To investigate the presence of bacterial DNA in temporal artery biopsies from patients with temporal arteritis.
  • To determine if bacterial infections play a role in the chronic stages of this vascular inflammatory disease.

  • Broad-range PCR was employed to detect bacterial DNA in 27 temporal artery biopsies and 5 control samples.
  • Histochemistry and light microscopy were used to assess inflammation in the biopsies.
