Summary

Recommended physical activity level (PAL) values are not suitable for Brazilians. New estimated PAL (EPAL) values, based on household surveys, are needed to accurately calculate energy requirements and prevent malnutrition or obesity.

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition Science
  • Public Health
  • Anthropometry

Background:

  • Accurate estimation of energy requirements (ERs) is crucial for public health.
  • Existing recommended physical activity level (RPAL) values may not accurately reflect diverse populations.
  • Household surveys provide valuable data on population demographics and lifestyle.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a method for estimating physical activity level (PAL) values using household survey data.
  • To compare these estimated PAL (EPAL) values with recommended PAL (RPAL) values for the Brazilian population.
  • To assess the implications of using RPAL versus EPAL for calculating energy requirements.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from a large-scale Brazilian food consumption and family budget survey (n=267,446).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Estimated two sets of EPAL values: one based on sex, age, and geography, and another including expenditure class.
  • Compared EPAL values with RPAL values across different demographic groups.
  • Main Results:

    • RPAL values for adult women overestimate energy needs, potentially leading to obesity.
    • RPAL values for adult males are inappropriate for separate rural/urban calculations, risking under- or overnutrition.
    • RPAL values for adolescent and older males, and adolescent females, underestimate needs due to unaddressed occupational activity.

    Conclusions:

    • Sex- and age-specific RPAL values are inadequate for determining Brazilian energy requirements.
    • Estimated PAL (EPAL) values derived from household surveys are necessary for accurate ER calculations.
    • Continuous recalculation and dissemination of EPAL values are vital for public health nutrition strategies.
