Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Adverse cutaneous reactions to low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) are infrequently documented.
  • Common reactions include localized ecchymoses, erythematous plaques, and nodules.

Observation:

  • A patient developed a generalized maculopapular rash following subcutaneous enoxaparin injection.
  • This reaction is distinct from the typically localized cutaneous events associated with LMWH.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first reported instance of a generalized exanthem linked to subcutaneous enoxaparin in the English literature.
  • A prior report in Europe described a generalized maculopapular rash with enoxaparin.

Implications:

  • Highlights the potential for rare, widespread dermatological adverse events from enoxaparin.
  • Emphasizes the need for clinicians to consider generalized skin reactions in patients receiving LMWH therapy.
