Summary

Lymphoscintigraphy reliably diagnoses lymphedema in chromoblastomycosis patients. However, standard treatments like itraconazole and cryotherapy did not improve lymphatic vessel morphology in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Lymphatic System

Background:

  • Chromoblastomycosis frequently leads to lymphedema, a significant complication.
  • Evaluating lymphatic system integrity is crucial for managing this condition.
  • Lymphoscintigraphy offers a noninvasive diagnostic approach for lymphedema.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the lymphatic system in patients with chromoblastomycosis using lymphoscintigraphy.
  • To objectively diagnose lymphedema secondary to chromoblastomycosis.

Main Methods:

  • Seven chromoblastomycosis patients underwent lymphoscintigraphy using Tc-99 m dextran.
  • Analysis included lymph vessel visibility, lymph node visualization, dermal backflow, and collateral vessels.
  • Patients received combined itraconazole and liquid nitrogen cryotherapy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Lymphoscintigraphy revealed abnormalities in extremities with clinical lymphedema.
  • Extremities without lymphedema showed normal lymphoscintigraphic parameters.
  • Post-treatment lymphoscintigraphy in 10 limbs showed no improvement in lymphatic alterations.

Conclusions:

  • Qualitative lymphoscintigraphy accurately visualizes lymphatic morphology and confirms lymphedema in chromoblastomycosis.
  • Combined oral itraconazole and cryotherapy did not alter the lymphatic system's morphology in these patients.
