Summary

Interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1alpha) gene polymorphisms are linked to increased risk of cerebral infarction (CI). Specifically, IL-1alpha (-889) allele 2 carriers showed a higher prevalence and risk of CI in the Korean population.

Background:

  • Interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays a significant role in central nervous system inflammation and brain damage after cerebral ischemia.
  • IL-1 expression elevates during both early and chronic stages of cerebral infarction (CI).
  • Genetic variations in IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) genes are associated with inflammatory diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between polymorphisms in IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-1ra genes and the risk of cerebral infarction (CI).
  • To determine if specific genotypes of these cytokines are potential genetic markers for CI in the Korean population.

  • Genotyping of IL-1alpha (-889), IL-1beta (+3,953), and IL-1ra polymorphisms was performed.
