Summary

Pulmonary segmentectomy is a parenchymal-sparing resection for lung conditions. This study shows it has acceptable outcomes for selected benign and malignant lung diseases.

Background:

  • Segmentectomy is an anatomic pulmonary parenchymal-sparing resection.
  • It is performed for specific benign lesions and selected lung cancer patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the experience with segmentectomy in a select group of patients.
  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of segmentectomy for benign and malignant lung diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 62 segmentectomies from 1991-2001 (excluding wedge resections).
  • Indications included lung cancer (43), benign disease (12), and metastatic cancer (7).
  • Actuarial survival calculated using Kaplan-Meier method; median follow-up of 28 months for malignancy.

  • Negative resection margins achieved in all lung cancer cases.
  • Complications occurred in 39% of patients; in-hospital mortality was 3%.
