    Summary

    Men with chronic fungal skin infections show reduced delayed hypersensitivity (DH) responses. This immune system defect is specific to certain antigens, particularly fungal ones like trichophytin.

    Background:

    • Chronic dermatophytosis is a common fungal skin infection.
    • Cell-mediated immunity, including delayed hypersensitivity (DH), plays a role in fungal infections.
    • The immune status of individuals with chronic dermatophytosis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate delayed hypersensitivity (DH) responses to common antigens in men with chronic dermatophyte infections.
    • To determine if chronic fungal infections impair cell-mediated immunity.

    Main Methods:

    • Delayed hypersensitivity (DH) testing was performed on 38 men with chronic dermatophyte infections and 20 healthy controls.
    • Seven common antigens were used, including trichophytin, mumps antigen, and Rhus oleoresin.
    • Skin test reactions were assessed to measure DH responses.

    Main Results:

    • The infected group showed a significantly reduced DH response to trichophytin compared to controls.
    • A decreased DH response was also observed in the infected group to mumps antigen and Rhus oleoresin.
    • Two individuals (5%) in the infected group exhibited anergy to all tested antigens.

    Conclusions:

    • Patients with chronic dermatophytosis exhibit a specific defect in DH to trichophytin.
    • Cell-mediated immune responses to other antigens may also be decreased in these patients.
    • Chronic fungal skin infections can lead to a measurable impairment of delayed hypersensitivity.
