Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Otolaryngology

Context:

  • Microbiological laboratory in Komárno, Slovak Republic
  • 1984-1991 study period
  • 4224 otitis smears analyzed

Purpose:

  • To investigate the incidence of microscopic filamentous fungi in otitis cases
  • Identify the specific fungal species involved
  • Review the regional occurrence of filamentous micromycetes in otitis

Summary:

  • Microscopic filamentous fungi were isolated from 138 (3.26%) of 4224 otitis smears.
  • Aspergillus species, including Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus fumigatus, were the most frequent isolates.
  • Other filamentous micromycetes were rarely found.

Impact:

  • Provides data on fungal prevalence in otitis, contributing to mycological and otolaryngological research.
  • Informs clinical diagnosis and treatment strategies for fungal otitis.
  • Establishes a baseline for future epidemiological studies on fungal infections in ear diseases.
