Anti-DNA antibodies, particularly anti-double-strand DNA antibodies, are key biomarkers for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This review hypothesizes that these antibodies may cross-react with negatively charged substances in vivo, challenging their specific in vivo targets.
