[Carotid surgery for prevention of ischemic stroke]

Early and late results of North American Trial (NASCET) demonstrate the efficacy of surgery to prevent major ipsilateral stroke in symptomatic patients; the benefit is proportional to the degree of stenosis. In asymptomatic patients, the benefit is real, but quantitavivement less pronounced.
