Summary

Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) with the GelPort device is safe for colorectal procedures. This study shows good results with HALS colorectal resections using GelPort.

Background:

Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) requires effective hand access devices.
The GelPort device is a novel tool for HALS procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the technique and outcomes of HALS colorectal resections using the GelPort device.
To assess the safety and reliability of GelPort in HALS procedures.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 33 HALS colorectal procedures (16 total colectomies, 10 low anterior resections).
Prospective recording and retrospective analysis of operative data, including intraoperative GelPort performance.

Main Results:

3.0% conversion rate to open surgery; 13.3% required minor incision enlargement.

Average operative time: 263 ± 85 min; blood loss: 282 ± 148 ml.

No device malfunctions; 9.1% major complications, 21% minor wound infections; mean hospital stay: 7.9 ± 3.8 days.

Conclusions:

GelPort facilitates safe and reliable HALS for various colorectal procedures.
The device demonstrates applicability and good outcomes in this initial series.
