Abstract:
The theme of communicating uncertainty in messages of risk is examined in terms of the dominant goal of mobilizing action. Voluntary and involuntary "noises" compromise the efficiency of the communication process and are jointly responsible for several biases, at different levels, channels and agents, in messages of risk. A further source of confusion lies in how a message of risk is lived by the single individual--whether he/she identifies him/herself as the specific object of risk, or rather interprets risk as a mild probability diffused among a vast population.
