Persistent interictal aphasia after repeated partial seizures: a case report.

Summary

A rare case of persistent aphasia between partial seizures was observed. This neurological symptom, linked to a left frontal epileptic focus, resolved after seizure cessation.

Background:

Partial seizures can manifest with diverse neurological symptoms.
Interictal aphasia is an uncommon presentation between epileptic seizures.

Observation:

A 64-year-old left-handed male experienced recurrent partial seizures with right facial twitching and altered awareness.
Persistent aphasia, a language deficit, was noted between seizure events.

Findings:

Electroencephalogram (EEG) identified an epileptic focus in the left frontal lobe.
Technetium-99m HMPAO brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) revealed focal hyperperfusion in the left frontal area during an attack.
Aphasia resolved spontaneously after the cessation of seizures.
