Summary

Naloxone, a drug blocking opioid receptors, reversed exercise-induced blood pressure reduction in healthy men. This suggests opioid receptors play a role in post-exercise hypotension, a phenomenon where blood pressure remains lower after aerobic activity.

Background:

  • Aerobic exercise is known to lower blood pressure for hours post-activity in both hypertensive and normotensive individuals.
  • Studies in spontaneously hypertensive rats showed naloxone, an opioid antagonist, could prevent this postexercise hypotension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if naloxone could reverse postexercise hypotension in normotensive humans.
  • To determine the role of opioid-sensitive receptors in exercise-induced blood pressure reduction.

Main Methods:

  • Eight healthy males (22-34 years) completed two 60-minute cycling sessions at 60% VO2 peak.
  • Naloxone or saline (control) was administered intravenously during the 29-minute recovery period.
  • Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored throughout exercise and recovery.

  • Systolic and mean arterial blood pressures were significantly lower after exercise compared to pre-exercise levels.
  • Naloxone administration transiently reversed this hypotensive effect.
  • Heart rate initially increased post-exercise but returned to resting levels within 13 minutes.

  • Opioid-sensitive receptors appear to be involved in the reduction of systolic blood pressure following submaximal exercise in normotensive humans.
  • Naloxone's transient reversal suggests a temporary modulation of cardiovascular control by opioid pathways post-exercise.
