Disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function are linked to severe negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenia patients. Abnormal cortisol patterns correlate with specific clinical features, suggesting HPA axis dysfunction in a subset of patients.
