Summary

Enteric infections are uncommon in active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. While initial bacterial pathogens were rare, some patients developed secondary colonisation resistance loss during treatment.

Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • The role of enteric pathogens in active UC is not fully understood.
  • Assessing microbial changes during UC treatment is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of microbial pathogens in patients with active ulcerative colitis.
  • To evaluate changes in fecal microbiota and colonisation resistance following treatment.
  • To identify potential risk factors or indicators associated with UC exacerbation or treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • Faecal samples were collected from 64 UC patients during their first episode and 30 with chronic relapse at presentation.
  • Samples were re-collected after 3 months of treatment for follow-up analysis.

    • Further research is needed to understand the implications of opportunistic microbial colonisation in UC patients.
