Summary

Women with anorexia nervosa show increased nocturnal melatonin secretion, despite an unaltered circadian rhythm. This finding may link to nocturnal hypoglycemia in these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder with significant physiological disturbances.
  • Melatonin, a hormone regulating sleep-wake cycles, plays a role in various bodily functions.
  • Disruptions in circadian rhythms and hormonal secretion are observed in eating disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma melatonin levels in women with untreated anorexia nervosa.
  • To compare melatonin secretion patterns between anorectic patients and healthy controls.
  • To explore potential links between melatonin levels and nocturnal hypoglycemia in anorexia nervosa.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected at three-hourly intervals over a 24-hour period.
  • Plasma melatonin levels were quantified in 11 women with untreated anorexia nervosa.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A control group of nine healthy women of normal weight was included for comparison.
  • Main Results:

    • The circadian rhythm of melatonin secretion was not significantly altered in women with anorexia nervosa.
    • Nocturnal melatonin secretion was significantly elevated in the anorexia nervosa group compared to controls.
    • A potential association between increased nocturnal melatonin and nocturnal hypoglycemia was suggested.

    Conclusions:

    • Untreated anorexia nervosa is associated with significantly greater nocturnal melatonin secretion.
    • The circadian pattern of melatonin remains largely unaltered.
    • Elevated nocturnal melatonin may be related to nocturnal hypoglycemia in anorexia nervosa patients.
