Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Rheumatology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by antiphospholipid antibodies and thrombotic events.
  • While various clinical manifestations exist, neurological involvement is recognized, though often rare.

Observation:

  • Chorea, a hyperkinetic movement disorder, is a known but infrequent complication of systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Antiphospholipid antibodies are strongly associated with chorea in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

Findings:

  • This report details two cases of patients presenting with chorea.
  • The clinical presentation suggested that primary antiphospholipid syndrome was the underlying cause of chorea in both patients.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • These cases suggest a potential causal link between primary antiphospholipid syndrome and chorea.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms and prevalence of chorea in PAPS.
