Summary

Nearly half of children and adolescents after atrial septal defect repair show lung function abnormalities, including increased lung stiffness and airway obstruction. Routine lung function testing is recommended post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common congenital heart condition.
  • Surgical correction is typically successful, but long-term effects on lung function are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate lung function in children and adolescents after surgical repair of secundum atrial septal defect.
  • To identify potential long-term pulmonary complications following successful ASD correction.

Main Methods:

  • Pulmonary function tests including lung volumes, elasticity, and airway patency were assessed.
  • Seventy-four patients (9-21 years old) were studied 2-11 years post-surgery.
  • Clinical condition was excellent in all participants.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 47.3% of patients exhibited lung function abnormalities.
  • Increased lung recoil pressure (32.4%) and reduced specific airway conductance (17.6%) were most frequent.
  • Static lung volumes remained within normal limits.

Conclusions:

  • Significant lung function abnormalities persist in a substantial portion of patients post-ASD repair.
  • Increased lung stiffness and larger airway obstruction are common findings.
  • Routine pulmonary function testing is proposed as a follow-up criterion for these patients.
