Summary

Lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies, despite in vitro anticoagulant effects, are linked to thromboembolic events, not bleeding. This case highlights their association with ischemic stroke.

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Hematology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies are acquired immunoglobulins targeting phospholipids.
  • These antibodies can interfere with in vitro coagulation tests due to their anticoagulant properties.

Observation:

  • These antibodies are paradoxically associated with thrombotic episodes, not hemorrhagic complications.
  • A patient presented with clinical and instrumental findings of ischemic stroke.

Findings:

  • The patient exhibited serum anticoagulant antibodies.
  • The presence of these antibodies was correlated with the occurrence of ischemic stroke.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the prothrombotic potential of lupus anticoagulant and anticardiolipin antibodies.
  • Further investigation into the mechanisms linking these antibodies to cerebrovascular events is warranted.
