The definition, classification, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of functional disturbances of the upper part of the digestive tract called "non-ulcer dyspepsia" are described. Attention is called to the frequency of these disorders, and stress is laid on the role of digestive tract motor function tests in the knowledge of the pathophysiology and effective treatment. In the therapeutic proposals the authors prefer the use of prokinetic drugs, especially metoclopramide, domperidone and cisapridine.
