Lyme disease, a common vector-borne illness, often presents with erythema migrans. A rare vesicular variant of this rash is identified, aiding in early diagnosis and prevention of complications.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Disease Epidemiology
  • Dermatology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Lyme disease is the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the U.S.
  • Erythema migrans is a hallmark early symptom of Lyme disease.
  • Clinical diagnosis of early Lyme disease relies on characteristic symptoms.

Observation:

  • A small percentage (8%) of patients with erythema migrans presented with vesicular lesions.
  • Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, was successfully cultured from two of these patients.
  • Blister fluid from a vesicular lesion yielded a positive culture in one case.

Findings:

  • Vesicular erythema migrans represents a less common presentation of Lyme disease.
  • The presence of vesicles does not preclude Borrelia burgdorferi infection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Diagnostic methods can confirm bacterial presence in vesicular lesions.
  • Implications:

    • Recognizing variants of erythema migrans is crucial for timely Lyme disease diagnosis.
    • Early Lyme disease treatment can prevent severe, long-term complications.
    • Vesicular erythema migrans should be considered in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory vesicular rashes.
