Acute buttock compartment syndrome is a rare condition often linked to substance abuse or anticoagulants. Treatment via fasciotomy can lead to decreased gluteal muscle volume and force, impacting patient recovery.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Trauma Surgery

Background:

  • Pelvic region has three major compartments: gluteus medius-minimus, gluteus maximus, and iliopsoas.
  • Pelvic compartment syndromes are rare and often lack a clear trauma history.

Observation:

  • Six patients with acute buttock compartment syndrome were treated between 1982 and 1990.
  • Fasciotomy of the gluteal compartment was performed in five patients.
  • Two patients with necrotizing fasciitis-related compartment syndrome died from septic multiple organ failure.

Findings:

  • Four patients had a mean follow-up of 29 months.
  • Three of these four patients showed decreased gluteal muscle volume.
  • All four patients exhibited reduced gluteal muscle force on ergometric testing.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing pelvic compartment syndromes.
  • Long-term sequelae include gluteal muscle atrophy and functional deficits.
  • Further research is needed to optimize treatment strategies and improve patient outcomes.
