Insights
A new coronary risk analyser software has been developed to accurately calculate an individual's absolute coronary risk. This tool aids in effective coronary risk management and preventive cardiology.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Informatics
- Preventive Medicine
Background:
- Coronary heart disease remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
- Accurate assessment of absolute coronary risk is crucial for effective risk management.
- Existing methods may lack the sensitivity and specificity required for comprehensive risk evaluation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a reliable coronary risk analyser for calculating absolute coronary risk.
- To create a software tool for personalized coronary risk management.
- To enhance the field of preventive cardiology through advanced risk assessment.
Main Methods:
- Extensive literature review to identify optimal risk calculation methodologies.
- Adoption of Joint British recommendations, derived from the Framingham Heart Study, for high sensitivity and specificity.
- Development of a Windows-based software application using Visual Basic programming language.
Main Results:
- The developed software accurately calculates absolute coronary risk over 2, 5, or 10-year periods.
- The system effectively stores patient data for longitudinal monitoring.
- The coronary risk analyser is easily installable on standard PC configurations.
Conclusions:
- The DEBEL-developed coronary risk analyser provides an effective tool for calculating and managing individual absolute coronary risk.
- The software supports preventive cardiology by enabling proactive patient management.
- This tool facilitates informed decision-making in cardiovascular risk reduction strategies.
Objectives:
The aim of the present study was to develop a coronary risk analyser which can calculate authentically the absolute coronary risk of an individual for coronary risk management.
Methods And Results:
After extensive literature survey was done to derive the most appropriate method to calculate the absolute coronary risk. Joint British recommendations derived from Framingham's heart study were adopted for its supreme sensitivity and specificity. A windows based software is developed using Visual basic programming language. The software is easily installable in any pentium PC with windows operating system and requires entry of a detailed medical profile of an individual for the calculation of absolute coronary risk.
Conclusion:
Coronary risk analyser developed by DEBEL effectively calculates the absolute coronary risk of an individual over 2, 5 or 10 years and stores the patient's data properly. The software is a tool to manage the coronary risk of a patient in the field of preventive cardiology.
