Insights
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a global health issue, particularly affecting Indians at younger ages. A new cardiac risk analyzer calculates absolute coronary risk over 2-10 years to aid management.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Preventive Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of global mortality.
- CHD prevalence is rising, with unique severity and earlier onset observed in Indian populations.
- Assessing the cumulative impact of multiple cardiac risk factors is crucial for accurate health risk evaluation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a cardiac risk analysis tool for predicting absolute coronary risk.
- To provide a method for calculating an individual's cardiac risk over 2, 5, or 10 years.
- To support proactive management of coronary risk status.
Main Methods:
- Development of a novel cardiac risk analysis device by DEBEL (Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro-Medical Laboratory).
- Integration of multiple coronary risk factors to calculate collective impact.
- Algorithm design for predicting absolute coronary risk at 2, 5, and 10-year intervals.
Main Results:
- The cardiac risk analyzer is under development to quantify absolute coronary risk.
- The tool aims to provide a comprehensive assessment beyond individual risk factors.
- The technology is intended to facilitate personalized cardiac health management strategies.
Conclusions:
- A new cardiac risk analyzer is being developed to address the growing burden of CHD.
- The tool will enable calculation of absolute coronary risk, aiding early intervention.
- This technology supports improved management of cardiac health, especially in high-risk populations.
Abstract:
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the major cause of sudden death amongst adults throughout the globe. Though the prevalence of CHD is increasing steadily all over, CHD amongst Indians is peculiar in the sense that it is more prevalent, more severe and appears at younger age. Development of CHD depends upon the status of various coronary risk factors in one's body. It has been observed that to measure the impact of risk factors for the cardiac health of a person, collective impact of all the known risk factors taken together should be calculated rather than individual risk factors. DEBEL (Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro-Medical Laboratory) is developing a cardiac risk analyser to calculate the absolute coronary risk of an individual in next 2,5 or 10 years and help in managing his coronary risk status.
