Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Vascular Pathology

Background:

  • Pulmonary hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors.
  • Massive hemoptysis is a rare but serious presentation.
  • Diagnosis can be challenging, often requiring advanced imaging and bronchoscopy.

Observation:

  • A 54-year-old male presented with massive hemoptysis.
  • Chest radiography and CT revealed a well-defined mass in the left upper lobe.
  • Fiberoptic bronchoscopy identified the bleeding source within the apicoposterior segment.

Findings:

  • Exploratory thoracotomy confirmed a mass.
  • Frozen section examination indicated a benign lesion.
  • Histopathological analysis definitively diagnosed a cavernous hemangioma.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Surgical resection (upper lobectomy) is curative for symptomatic pulmonary hemangiomas.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in massive hemoptysis.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal management of pulmonary hemangiomas is warranted.
