Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Preventive Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap smear) is widely implemented, but breast cancer screening (mammography) is underutilized.
  • Patients undergoing one screening test are more likely to undergo others.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if Pap smear visits prompt physicians to order screening mammograms.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective matched case-control study.
  • Included women over 50 without breast cancer history visiting a family practice residency.
  • Matched cases (mammogram) with controls (no mammogram) by age and visit number.

Main Results:

  • Women who had a Pap smear had an adjusted odds ratio of 6.67 for completing a mammogram.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This association remained significant after controlling for confounding factors.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pap smears appear to act as a catalyst for physicians to order mammograms.
    • Screening tests, like Pap smears and mammograms, may be perceived by physicians as a package of services.
