Refractive surgery for myopia can lead to retinal detachment. Scleral buckling for repair often causes significant refractive changes, including myopia recurrence.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery
  • Refractive Surgery

Background:

  • Refractive surgery, including radial keratotomy and keratomileusis, has been widely used for myopia correction.
  • These procedures are associated with a risk of retinal detachment.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed 14 eyes in 12 patients who developed retinal detachment after refractive surgery.
  • Patients presented with retinal breaks or detachments, both symptomatic and asymptomatic.

Findings:

  • Anatomic reattachment was achieved in 85.7% of eyes.
  • Scleral buckling procedures frequently induced refractive changes, with 86% experiencing myopia recurrence and 71% showing changes in myopic astigmatism.
  • Visual acuity improved in 21.4%, remained stable in 64.3%, and worsened in 14.3%.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early detection and treatment of peripheral retinal pathology may prevent detachments.
  • Avoiding encircling scleral buckles or using alternative surgical methods could mitigate induced refractive errors post-retinal detachment repair.
