Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Pharmacognosy
  • Botany

Background:

  • Latua pubiflora, an endemic Chilean plant from the Solanaceae family, is known for its bioactive compounds.
  • Previous research has identified certain tropane alkaloids in this species.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify tropane alkaloids from the leaves of Latua pubiflora.
  • To report novel findings of specific alkaloids in this plant species.

Main Methods:

  • Phytochemical analysis of Latua pubiflora leaf extracts.
  • Isolation and identification of chemical constituents using standard laboratory techniques.

Main Results:

  • Four known tropane alkaloids were successfully isolated from the plant material.
  • 3alpha-cinnamoyloxitropane and apoatropine were identified for the first time in Latua pubiflora.
  • Scopolamine and hyoscyamine, previously reported, were also confirmed.

Conclusions:

  • The phytochemical profile of Latua pubiflora includes a diverse range of tropane alkaloids.
  • The presence of 3alpha-cinnamoyloxitropane and apoatropine expands the known chemical constituents of this endemic species.
