Summary
The desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma (DA), a rare jaw tumor, presents distinct radiographic and histologic features. This case report details a successful enucleation of DA in a 68-year-old man with no recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Oral Pathology
- Odontogenic Tumors
- Surgical Oncology
Background:
- Ameloblastoma is a common odontogenic tumor, but the desmoplastic variant (DA) exhibits unique characteristics.
- DA presents with dense collagenous stroma and can appear as a mixed radiopaque-radiolucent lesion, differing from typical ameloblastomas.
Observation:
- A 68-year-old male presented with a mass in the right mental region, impacting prosthesis use.
- Histopathological examination revealed large epithelial islands within dense, collagenous desmoplastic stroma, consistent with DA.
Findings:
- The diagnosis of desmoplastic variant of ameloblastoma was confirmed histopathologically.
- Surgical enucleation under local anesthesia was performed for the lesion.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of recognizing the distinct features of DA for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
- Successful management of DA through enucleation with long-term follow-up is demonstrated.
