A rare case of eye myiasis occurred in a child due to a Cuterebra larva. Surgical removal of the botfly larva resolved the painful eyelid abscess.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Entomology
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • External ophthalmomyiasis is a rare condition caused by dipteran larvae infecting the eye and surrounding tissues.
  • Cuterebra species are known to cause myiasis in various mammals, but ocular involvement in humans is infrequent.

Observation:

  • A three-year-old boy presented with a severe, painful abscess on the nasal aspect of his right upper eyelid.
  • A single larva, identified as belonging to the genus Cuterebra (family Cuterebridae), was found within the abscess.

Findings:

  • The larva was successfully removed from the eyelid abscess.
  • Following larval extraction, the patient's abscess showed rapid clinical resolution.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case highlights an unusual presentation of external ophthalmomyiasis in a pediatric patient.
  • Despite the patient's favorable socioeconomic status, Cuterebra infestation occurred, emphasizing the need for awareness of zoonotic parasites.
