Background:

  • Lafora's disease is a rare, fatal, inherited neurodegenerative disorder.
  • It is characterized by progressive myoclonus epilepsy in dogs.

Observation:

  • A nine-year-old female beagle presented with progressive myoclonic jerks.
  • Clinical signs included mental depression and paroxysmal jerks triggered by external stimuli.
  • Electroencephalography confirmed myoclonus epilepsy.

Findings:

  • Postmortem histopathology revealed periodic acid-Schiff-positive inclusion bodies in the central nervous system.
  • Inclusion bodies were particularly concentrated in the cerebellum.
  • These findings confirmed the diagnosis of Lafora's disease.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of recognizing clinical and pathological signs of Lafora's disease in canines.
  • Understanding Lafora's disease aids in veterinary diagnosis and management of canine epilepsy.
  • Further research into canine neurodegenerative diseases is warranted.
