Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pediatric Dentistry

Background:

  • The mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst (MBBC) is a developmental cyst affecting the permanent mandibular first molar in children aged 6-8.
  • Controversy exists regarding the optimal treatment: extraction of the affected tooth versus cyst enucleation alone.

Observation:

  • This article details diagnostic features and presents a case series of five patients (seven cysts), including two sets of identical twins.
  • The study observed the clinical presentation and management outcomes of MBBC.

Findings:

  • Enucleation of the cyst without extraction of the involved mandibular first molar is identified as the treatment of choice.
  • This approach is supported by available data and clinical experience.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Familiarizes oral and maxillofacial surgeons with MBBC diagnosis and management.
  • Highlights conservative treatment as the preferred method, potentially preserving the permanent mandibular first molar in pediatric patients.
