Summary

Endosulfan insecticide poisoning caused fatalities in cattle after topical application for ectoparasite control. Affected animals exhibited severe respiratory distress, neurological signs, and post-mortem findings consistent with organochlorine toxicity.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Toxicology
  • Animal Health
  • Insecticide Safety

Background:

  • Topical application of insecticides is common for ectoparasite control in livestock.
  • Organochlorine pesticides, such as endosulfan, pose risks to animal health if misused.
  • Understanding the toxicological effects of endosulfan is crucial for preventing livestock poisoning.

Observation:

  • Cattle were treated topically with endosulfan for ectoparasite control.
  • Two out of eleven cattle died within 48 hours post-application.
  • Clinical signs included rapid, difficult breathing, oral foamy exudates, tremors, exophthalmos, and coma.

Findings:

  • Necropsy revealed hemorrhages on serosal membranes of visceral organs and lungs.
  • Severe pulmonary edema and emphysema were observed.
  • Endosulfan residues detected in liver (13.1 ppm), kidney (4.0 ppm), lungs (1.6 ppm), and muscle (0.8 ppm).

Implications:

  • Endosulfan poisoning can be fatal in cattle, highlighting risks associated with improper use.
  • Veterinary toxicologists and livestock owners must be aware of endosulfan's toxicity.
  • This case underscores the importance of adhering to recommended insecticide application guidelines to prevent animal poisoning incidents.
