Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pharmacology

Context:

  • Intracavernous injections of vasoactive drugs are used to treat erectile dysfunction.
  • Priapism is a known but infrequent complication of this treatment.

Purpose:

  • To report the incidence and characteristics of priapism following intracavernous vasoactive drug injections.

Summary:

  • This study observed 16 cases of priapism in 404 patients treated with intracavernous vasoactive drugs.
  • The complication was most common with a combination of papaverine and phentolamine.
  • Even with reduced dosages, priapism recurred in some patients, highlighting the risk associated with these agents.

Impact:

  • This data underscores the importance of careful patient selection and monitoring when using intracavernous vasoactive drugs.
  • It suggests a need for awareness of priapism risk, particularly with combination therapies and specific agents like papaverine.
