Summary

Neuroepithelial cysts can cause movement disorders. Stereotactic drainage offers temporary relief, but a cyst access device may be better for long-term management of these rare neurological conditions.

Background:

  • Neuroepithelial cysts are rare, fluid-filled CNS lesions of unknown origin.
  • While often asymptomatic, they can manifest as seizures, mass effect, or movement disorders.

Observation:

  • Two cases illustrate movement disorders (dystonia, tremor, ballismus, choreoathetosis, diplopia, nystagmus, hemiparesis) caused by neuroepithelial cysts.
  • Initial stereotactic drainage provided temporary symptom relief in both patients.

Findings:

  • Recurrence of symptoms after simple drainage highlights its limitations.
  • Placement of a cyst access device facilitated sustained improvement in one case.

Implications:

  • Simple stereotactic aspiration of neuroepithelial cysts has a high recurrence rate.
