Summary

Power motion-mode transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a new technique that enhances embolus detection. This study found PMD TCD identifies more microbubble signals (MBS) than spectral TCD, especially in the ACA and MCA.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate novel criteria for detecting emboli using power motion-mode transcranial Doppler (PMD).
  • To compare the diagnostic performance of PMD TCD with conventional spectral TCD for microemboli detection in patients with right-to-left shunts.

  • Thirty-six patients with confirmed right-to-left shunts underwent both spectral TCD and PMD TCD bubble studies.

    • PMD TCD enhances emboli detection by identifying signals in both the anterior and middle cerebral arteries.
    • Adherence to specific criteria can prevent overcounting of emboli with PMD TCD.
