Summary

Adults with persistent nocturnal enuresis (NE) often have bladder dysfunction, specifically detrusor instability. Urodynamic studies show normal bladder capacity and voiding function in these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Nephrology
  • Continence Research

Background:

  • Nocturnal enuresis (NE) affects 0.5-2% of adults.
  • NE is multifactorial, with potential causes including antidiuretic hormone (ADH) rhythm disruption and bladder function disorders.
  • The precise role of bladder dysfunction in persistent adult NE requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and define bladder function in adult patients experiencing persistent nocturnal enuresis.
  • To identify urodynamic parameters associated with adult NE.
  • To differentiate between NE causes related to bladder function versus other factors.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-two adult patients with primary NE were included in the study.
  • Urodynamic examinations, including filling and voiding cystometry, were performed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pressure-flow analysis was conducted using Schafer's nomogram to interpret results.
  • Main Results:

    • Detrusor instability was observed in 38.5% of adult NE patients.
    • Patients with instability exhibited significantly smaller bladder capacity and poorer compliance (P<0.0001).
    • Voiding function in adult enuretics was found to be normal, with normal detrusor pressures during voiding.

    Conclusions:

    • Urodynamic assessment reveals a significant incidence of detrusor instability in adults with persistent NE.
    • Bladder instability in this population is linked to reduced bladder capacity and compliance.
    • Adult NE patients demonstrate normal voiding bladder function, suggesting instability as a key factor.
