Summary

Vocal warm-up exercises did not significantly change vocal function measures in women with chronic vocal fatigue. However, loud reading may increase phonation threshold pressure, especially at higher pitches.

Background:

  • Vocal warm-up (WU) exercises are proposed to enhance vocal function.
  • Limited research exists on the effects of vocal WU on normal or disordered voices.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of vocal WU, loud reading, and vocal silence on phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and self-perceived phonatory effort (PPE).
  • To examine vocal function changes in young women experiencing chronic vocal fatigue.

Main Methods:

  • Eight young women with chronic vocal fatigue participated.
  • Measures included PTP and PPE at three pitches after 20 min of WU, 1 hr of loud reading, and 30 min of vocal silence.
  • A placebo condition of vocal rest was compared to WU before loud reading.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant changes in PTP or PPE were observed after any experimental task.
  • High between-subject variability influenced the results.
  • Removing one outlier revealed a significant difference in PTP across tasks, but specific effects were not identified.

Conclusions:

  • The study did not find significant evidence that vocal warm-ups, loud reading, or vocal silence alter PTP or PPE in this cohort.
  • Increased PTP after loud reading at the highest pitch warrants further investigation.
  • High variability suggests the need for larger sample sizes in future voice research.
