Summary

Maxillary sinus elevation procedures utilize various bone graft materials. Most materials showed low resorption and implant loss rates, except for gel-state calcium carbonate, which had high resorption.

Background:

  • Maxillary sinus elevation is a surgical procedure to augment bone height for dental implants.
  • Various bone graft materials, including autogenous bone and synthetic substitutes, are used for sinus augmentation.
  • Graft material resorption and implant loss are potential complications following sinus elevation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the failure rates (graft resorption and implant loss) of different bone graft materials used in maxillary sinus augmentations.
  • To compare the efficacy and predictability of various bone substitutes in sinus elevation procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A 5-year follow-up study (1996-2001) of 810 maxillary sinus augmentations.
  • Inclusion of various graft materials: autogenous bone, calcium carbonate-coated polymer, algal hydroxylapatite, coral-derived calcium carbonate gel, beta-tricalcium phosphate, and combinations with platelet-rich plasma.
