Takayasu arteritis (TA) can affect skin vessels, presenting with nodular lesions. Histological findings in these cutaneous manifestations of TA vary, even with similar morphologies.

Background:

  • Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a chronic inflammatory arteriopathy affecting large vessels.
  • Cutaneous manifestations are common in TA, occurring in both early and late disease stages.
  • Specific skin lesions associated with TA often mimic erythema nodosum, erythema induratum, and pyoderma gangrenosum.

Observation:

  • This study reports on two Caucasian patients with TA presenting with nodular skin lesions.
  • Nine skin biopsies from these patients were analyzed.
  • Necrotizing vasculitis was identified in five of the biopsies.

Findings:

  • Nodular cutaneous lesions are a frequent manifestation of Takayasu arteritis in Caucasian patients.
  • Histological examination of skin biopsies from TA patients reveals diverse findings, including necrotizing vasculitis.
